How is teeth whitening done?

Key Benefits of Teeth Whitening

  • Lightens tooth staining.
  • Works on people of any age
  • Is a near-permanent solution for a dull smile, restoring brightness and brings a smile alive

An impression is taken to make a specialized tray or stent to hold the bleach against the teeth. In only a week, your custom whitening trays will be ready for you to pick up. We provide you with a special whitening agent that you put into your custom trays. The material is used each day for about30 minutes for a week or two, and at the end of this time, significant whitening will occur. In some cases, the change is nothing short of brilliant. Whitening shells are good for several years, and to maintain your new white smile, you can simply and inexpensively “touch up” with new whitening gel whenever you would like an extra boost to your smile.

Are there any side effects?

Some people experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity to cold during treatment. These symptoms disappear within 1-3 days after completion of the treatment.

How long is the procedure?

The appointment to take the impressions for your custom trays takes 10 minutes. One week later, there is another 10 minute appointment to pick up your trays and whitening gel and to be instructed on how to use them! It is unbelievably quick and easy!

What is the difference between “In-Office” and “At-Home” whitening?

For the majority of patients and circumstances, Dr. Kochan prefers “At-Home” whitening for her patients. The results are superior, and the whiteness of the patients teeth lasts much longer. “At-Home” whitening is also more cost effective for the patients, since their white smile can be maintained forever, just by keeping their custom trays and purchasing inexpensive refills of the whitening gel. With “In-Office” whitening, if teeth discolor over time with the use of coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco products, the entire procedure needs to be repeated to re-lighten the teeth.

However, if you have a last minute event in your future such as a wedding or a school reunion, and don’t have enough time to do the “At-Home” whitening procedure….then the “In-Office” method is for you!
